Cannon School hosts workshop for local preschool teachers

Earlier this month, Cannon School welcomed close to 100 local preschool teachers to campus for a luncheon/ workshop.  The workshop, “A Kaleidoscope of Colors Through Music and Literacy,” was presented by Cannon School music teacher, Aimee Pfitzner, and Reading Specialist, Barb Falkenbury.

After a luncheon in Taylor Hall, attendees were given a colorful series of lessons and curriculum demonstrations on rhythm and melody, phonemic awareness, comprehension and rhyming, all geared toward appropriate learning in a preschool classroom. Each teacher received hands-on materials to bring back to their schools.

“We all really enjoyed it,” said Venita West, program assistant director at La Petite Academy on Harris Boulevard. “It was very helpful in planning our lessons. I hope Cannon continues to have these events.”

“I enjoyed getting up and moving with the music,” said Gabrielle Moore, director of Prospect Presbyterian Preschool in Mooresville.  “With the state not being able to provide as much funding, this is a wonderful outreach geared toward preschools. I want to be invited to the next one!”

The attending preschools, many of which see their graduating students enter the Cannon community, were awarded Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for their workshop participation.
