  • The boys JV basketball team traveled to Charlotte Christian Tuesday to take on the league leader Knights and fell by a score of 69-43. The host team took advantage of their size advantage to overpower the Cougars in the second quarter, and even though we played them even the rest of the game, their lead was too much to overcome. The boys once again played all ought for 32 minutes with everyone that played getting into the scoring column. Lucas Anderson, Daniel Wyatt, and Blake Brewer led Cannon with twelve, ten, and eight points. Ben Dorfman and Eric Fromke were the leading rebounders with six each. The boys will look to avenge a four point loss to Providence Day when they meet Friday at home.

  • Cannon’s Varsity Boys Basketball Team traveled to south Charlotte Tuesday night to take on one of the city’s top teams and programs, Charlotte Christian. Cannon used an effective match-up zone defense throughout the first half that limited the normally potent Knight’s offensive attack. The scoring trio of Alec Wintering, Hans-Christian Lauer and Will Nork would keep the Cougars close on the offensive end in the first period. Cannon would get a huge boost from Sr. Stewart Brown in the second quarter as he buried two 3-pters. Nork would chip in four more points and at intermission Cannon was within striking distance at 31-25.  Unfortunately Cannon would come out in the second half and take some early, unadvised shots and their main nemesis of the night continued to rear its ugly head; keeping Charlotte Christian off the offensive glass. The overwhelming majority of Christian’s points in the first half had come off of missed shots that they rebounded on their own end and put back in the basket. The trend continued ad naseum in the second half. Christian would run out to a 10-point lead near the end of the third quarter and then would decide to hold the ball versus Cannon’s zone rather than continue to attack it. When Cannon was eventually forced out of their zone for good in the fourth quarter, the Knights would put the game away with their superior size and athleticism. In the end Christian had run away with a 67-41 win.  Alec Wintering would lead Cannon with 12 points, 6 assists and 3 steals. Will Nork would have 10 points and 5 rebounds. Stewart Brown would contribute 9 points on three made 3-pointers and Hans-Christian Lauer had 6 points and 7 rebounds.
