- Cannon School hosted the Spartans of Gaston Day School on Wednesday night in a non-conference make-up game from an earlier snow date. The Cougars would survive a lethargic first half on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court and ride the momentum and spark provided by Sr. Stewart Brown in the third quarter for a 50-37 victory. Cannon struggled with creating any momentum at all in the first half and found themselves down 20-17 to a young, but promising, team from Gaston Day. Sr. Stewart Brown would grab the spotlight in the third quarter. The lefty wing guard would light the home crowd up with four consecutive made three-pointers in short succession. Brown’s outside stroke effectively wiped out an 8-point Gaston Day lead. Soph. Alec Wintering would get his game going in the third quarter as well. Wintering would score the bulk of his game-high 25 points in the third quarter as he began to put his foot on the offensive accelerator. The fourth quarter saw Cannon open up with the ball in their possession and effectively milk over two minutes off the clock as the team dutifully ran its offense. Over the final 8 minutes Cannon would take good shots, make their free throws and hold Gaston Day to only one point. In the end, Cannon had survived a serious test by the score of 50-37. Alec Wintering would score 25 points, dish out 7 assists and pull down 6 rebounds. Stewart Brown would score 12 points and snare 5 rebounds. Will Nork, who returned to lineup after missing last night’s Forsyth Country Day game due to illness, would log some tough minutes while scoring 8 points and corralling 4 rebounds. Lastly, unsung hero Brendan McWilliams would pull down a game-high 11 rebounds and was a major force in helping lead Cannon’s fast break in the second half.
