End of the Year Blog Post from Cannon Parent Jessica Shirey

I recently saw the trailer for the upcoming summer movie “Bad Moms.”  I know it isn’t very academic of me to bring it up, but I recognized myself in the mom that was sprinting through breakfast with her kids and her entire day without feeling like she was really doing the right things for her children at any one moment. I see elements of this in my days and I’m sure you do as well. This is the exact reason that the last five months have passed so quickly and I’m just poking my head out of the sand to assess the year.

Teacher Appreciation week began the flurry of year-end activities at Cannon. I can’t give our teachers enough praise in one sentence…Thank you for all that you do for our children! In the Lower School, we are lucky that we get to enjoy each event during these last weeks without thinking about our children having finals exams. When I look at my son he is a very different child than when he started Kindergarten. I tend to weigh and measure the academic growth, but the most important thing for me is that he still loves going to school every day. Even though our lives are busy, I know that he feels happy and balanced at Cannon and I couldn’t ask for more since I want to allow him to be a child for as long as I can.

I want to thank each and every one of you for having a hand in our children’s successes this year. Whether or not you realize it, the box of school supplies waiting in the classroom on the first day of school, the cookies that you sent in when your child was King Bee, the cultural display you helped to create in the hallway, or your gift to the Annual Fund made an impact on the school year. From the smallest gesture to the grandest, each contribution to our community counted.

I won’t get into the “Bad Moms” moments that I had this year, but when I know that my happiest times were the ones that I spent at school visiting during lunch, helping with a bulletin board, or attending a special event. As we reboot over the summer, think about what you like to do best with your children and plan to bring your passion and experience back to Cannon in the Fall to a Parents at Cannon (PAC) organization or your child’s classroom. I’m looking forward to meeting the new families that will be joining us and I hope that you have a fantastic break!
